Free radicals formed under the influence of UV radiation and other exogenous factors damage cellular lipids, proteins, and DNA, trigger a cascade reaction of oxidative stress, and accelerate skin photoageing. Ascorbic acid is a cofactor for prolyl and lysyl hydroxylases, which are necessary for collagen synthesis, and at the same time an effective acceptor of reactive oxygen species.
