The hydration level of the stratum corneum is determined by the balance of two types of moisturising components: humectants, which attract water, and emollients \/ occlusives, which help retain it in the skin and reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL<\/b><\/span>). The normal water content of the stratum corneum is 20-35%<\/b><\/span>; when this level drops below 10%<\/b><\/span>, the skin is visually and tactilely perceived as dry. With age, the natural content of ceramides and other lipids in the stratum corneum gradually decreases, weakening the barrier function and increasing TEWL<\/b><\/span> regardless of skin type.
